2,299 homes were left without electricity last Friday night after a huge power cut struck in the town.

The loss of power, which left the town in darkness, was caused by a feeder tripping out.

The power cut affected a large amount of Goole, particularly the town centre, as the traffic lights on Boothferry Road failed to work and the street lights were turned off.

The electricity failure happened at around ten past six last week however was back up and running at around ten past 8.

Northern Grid was the electricity supplier that suffered from the failure.

Sharon Lezzi works at Christopher Hair Design in Wesley Square. She had to close the salon early due to the electric failure. She said: “It was a nightmare! I didn’t know if the customers were going to turn up and I couldn’t ring them as the landline was down.

“We’ve never had anything like this happen before especially as it was so dark.”

The programme featured the manager of Yorkshire Waterways Museum, Claire Hunt, and viewers could watch her describe how she thinks the new trail could benefit not only the museum but Goole in general.

Former bargeman Ernie Sherburn also spoke on the programme of his time working on Gooles Famous Tom Pudding coal barges and how they supported a huge amount of jobs. He said while speaking on the programme:

“well you can see by the craft around it has been busy but there’s just nothing for them to do these days.

“It’s such a shame because the potential is there.”

He continued to say how he is disappointed the barge isn’t what it used to be.

He added: “It’s good for leisure definitely but I’d still like to see it be used back for the real McCoy rather than just the pleasure craft.”

Owner and Manager of Market Place Chinese restaurant Golden Cottage, Tommy Wan said the yearly event is a positive prospect for the town.

He said: “I think it’s great when events like this happen.

“We should do more things like this throughout the year as it gets all the community out and about to celebrate and it’s a really great atmosphere.

“This year it’s even bigger and better with more stalls and the event spreading all the way over to the other side of town.”

He continued to say that the event is helpful with his business.

He said: “We’re always busy on this night so it’s really good to see everybody enjoying themselves and coming in for a meal afterwards or during.”

The Christmas Fayre had a whole host of festive food stalls such as a roasted chestnut van, a hog roast and a burger van along with Christmas tree and wreath stalls and fairground rides.

Live music from KCFM and Howden School students singing Christmas Carols accompanied the bustling atmosphere.
